Watergate Scandal

On July 17th 1972, a security guard was doing his run through the Democratic Headquarters in Washington DC. He noticed a piece of wire taped to the wall. He removed the tape and carried on his way. Later that day he found the tape to be reattached. He got suspicious and called the authorities.

The criminals were all part of Nixon’s administration, who formed a group called CREEP (the committee for the re-election of the president). The men were accused of tapping into the phone lines and taking pictures of documentations to gather information that can be harmful to Republican Candidates so Nixon will be re-elected.

President Nixon had no prior knowledge of the break in attempt but because he was a paranoid individual he ordered a cover up.

The Washington Post and Senate both begin to investigate. The Senate learns that Nixon had recorded every meeting that took place in the White House. When the Senate asked for the tapes Nixon was aware of the consequences and refused to give up the tape.

So this affair was brought to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court orders Nixon to give the Senate possession of the tapes. The Senate learns that Nixon was ordering to stop the investigation. So Nixon was going to face impeachment because of lying under oath and for interfering with the law.

So to avoid the humiliation of being impeached, Nixon resigned from office in 1974 and his Vice President, Gerald Ford, became president.
